What is Strategic Marketing?

Most assume it's just picking a cool logo, buying ads on TV or radio saying why their product or service is worth spending money on, and posting memes on Facebook. Truth is Marketing Strategy done the right way affects every component of a business. Any miniscule aspect of your business that comes into contact with the outside world is (or should be) included in your marketing strategic plan. How your receptionist answers your phones, the invoices you send out to clients and the recommendations clients and staff give their friends over dinner.

A good marketing strategy involves a cemented brand image, a way of business that your staff, customers and leads know and breathe. It all comes back down to where you sit in the market, and who you're selling to.

COMPARITIVE EXAMPLES

 If you're selling fine wine at $10,000 a bottle, your marketing/business will be sleek, sophisticated;
  • Your phones systems will have classy hold music, answered by a mature lady taking elocution lessons,
  • Your documentation and invoices will be minimalistic and elegant, gold and purple or rich, wealthy colours with emblems
  • Any emails or communications will be checked by grammar professionals and linguists
  • Your business cards will be glossed and embossed
  • your logo will be overly complicated or aristocratic
  • your marketed brand. and entire business image is engrained in a rich 'brand' that is felt and believed the moment someone comes in contact with the business.
It appeals to your target market of high class individuals with large amounts of expendable cash.
On the other hand, if you're a budget tourism business in rural northern Australia selling guided tours, you're marketing/business will be friendly, approachable:
  • Your phone will be answered as quickly as possible, by a bubbly, friendly individual who knows the area and your services and can make a joke and relate to anyone who calls
  •  Your paperwork will be bright and appealing, with lots of photos and smiling faces
  • Any emails will be very casual and approachable, with smiley faces, questions, Australian slang and calling people "mate"
  • Business cards will be fun or informative
  • Logo will be iconic of the region, brightly coloured and playful or simple
  • your entire marketing brand and business image focused on friendly approachable people, a stereotypical "Aussie" feel of having a laugh while exploring new places.
It appeals to your target market of tourists.
